The Big Texan Story

More Than A Steak. A Texas Legend.

Where Legends Begin

A Vision on Route 66

In 1960, R.J. "Bob" Lee had a vision. He wanted to create a place where travelers on Route 66 could experience true Texas hospitality - bold flavors, generous portions, and a sense of adventure.

He opened The Big Texan Steak Ranch in Amarillo, Texas, and from day one, it was different. This wasn't just a restaurant. It was a destination.

"If you're going to do something, do it big." - R.J. "Bob" Lee, Founder

That philosophy shaped everything about The Big Texan - from the massive steaks to the larger-than-life cowboy sign that's become a Route 66 icon. Six decades later, the Lee family still operates The Big Texan with the same commitment to quality and hospitality that Bob established. Some things never change.

The Legend

The 72oz Challenge

It started with a bet.

In 1960, a cowboy walked into The Big Texan and claimed he could eat anything Bob Lee put in front of him. Bob took him up on it - and the 72oz Steak Challenge was born.

The rules were simple: Finish a 72-ounce sirloin steak with the traditional restaurant sides, all in one hour. Do it, and the meal is free. Fail, and you pay.
